What Does Maintenance Look Like on an Electric Vehicle?

One of the questions fleets often have when considering an electric vehicle is: What happens when it needs maintenance?
While electric buses and trucks still require regular inspections and maintenance, their powertrains are fundamentally different from traditional diesel vehicles. With fewer moving parts and no internal combustion engine, some routine maintenance needs can change.
Fewer Moving Parts
Traditional diesel vehicles have complex engines with many components that require regular service. Electric vehicles use an electric motor and battery system instead, eliminating many of the components associated with an internal combustion engine. That means no engine oil changes, spark plugs, fuel filters, or other engine-related maintenance.
Regenerative Braking Can Reduce Brake Wear
Electric vehicles use regenerative braking to help slow the vehicle while recovering energy and returning it to the battery. Because regenerative braking can handle some of the work normally done by friction brakes, brake components may experience less wear over time. This can potentially extend service intervals for certain brake components.
The Battery Is Built for the Long Haul
The battery is one of the most important components of an electric commercial vehicle, which is why battery safety, durability, and performance are critical. RIDE uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology in its vehicles, and its batteries undergo extensive testing designed to evaluate performance and safety under demanding conditions.
Maintenance Doesn’t Go Away
Going electric doesn’t mean eliminating maintenance. Tires, suspension, steering, brakes, cooling systems, and other vehicle components still need regular inspection and service. What changes is where maintenance is focused. Electric vehicles require technicians who understand high-voltage systems, battery technology, electric drivetrains, and vehicle diagnostics. That’s why training and technical support are an important part of making the transition to electric.
A Different Approach to Keeping Fleets Moving
For fleets, the goal isn’t simply to have a vehicle that is electric. It’s to have a vehicle that can remain reliable and productive throughout its service life. With fewer traditional powertrain components, regenerative braking, and a maintenance program built around electric vehicle technology, electrification can change how fleets approach vehicle maintenance.
Electric vehicles still need care. They just need a different kind of care.
